Conduct with Regard to the Public Generally

Professionals must recognise that their work serves not only clients but also the wider community, and that public trust in the legal system, the profession and its members depends on exemplary behaviour. They must:

• Act with integrity, honesty and transparency, avoiding acts that mislead or harm the public’s perception of the profession.

• Ensure that communications to the public are clear, understandable and free of exaggeration or false claims.

• Regard the public interest as a key factor: refrain from conduct that is purely self-serving if it undermines confidence in the justice system or the legal profession.

• Treat all persons with respect and fairness, regardless of status, background or ability to pay, thereby reflecting the profession’s commitment to equal access and service.

• Avoid the use of soliciting or aggressive advertising aimed at exploiting vulnerable people or stirring up unnecessary litigation.

• Maintain professional courtesy and cooperation with public bodies, other professionals and the community, recognising that the profession’s reputation depends on collective conduct.

• Uphold and promote the rule of law, freedom of access to justice and the rights of individuals, thereby contributing positively to society and public confidence in legal services.
